Modern and efficient transport of living fish: Innovative covering system made from Polystone® G natural

Machined using customer drawings: Roof elements made from Polystone® G natural withstand contact with salt water thanks to their high resistance to corrosion

Aqua farms are booming. Overfishing of seas has drastically reduced fish stocks in the ocean. To combat this, in aqua farms, fish such as salmon are purposefully farmed in the sea. The careful transport of living, adult fish on land is particularly important. For this purpose a leading manufacturer of ships in Norway is constructing modern transport ships with an innovative cylindrical transport tank, which offers many advantages over conventional rectangular tanks. Part of the system is Polystone® G natural from Röchling.

When the day comes for the fish to be transported by land, the aqua farmers spare no effort in ensuring that their fish are transported as efficiently and carefully as possible. The cylindrical tank was specially developed for this and, with its modern design and high functionality, it contributes to stress-free transport.

In comparison to conventional rectangular tanks, the cylindrical form supports the flow of water. A ventilation system can evenly supply the tank with oxygen while extracting the carbon dioxide from it. This leads to a consistently high water quality within the entire tank.

The round design of the tank mirrors the form of the similarly round aquafarms in the sea, in which the salmon are grown. Thus the fish are transported in a familiar environment.

The highlight of the system is the specially developed, lowerable roof. If the fish need to be unloaded, the roof can be precisely lowered. The space in the tank is slowly reduced and the fish are carefully lead into a tube system for unloading.

The roof elements were machined to customer's drawings from Polystone® G natural by Röchling, Allingåbro, Denmark. With its high resistance to corrosion the plastic withstands prolonged contact with salt water. Thanks to the excellent processing properties the roof elements can be simply machined within narrow tolerances using customer drawings. A density of just 0.95 g/cm³ facilitates simple handling during construction and installation of the roof system.
